A clear growth decision can still fail after the boardroom when the next level does not feel safe to lead.
When the plan does not happen
You can leave a boardroom with a clear decision, a target for the next quarter and a plan everyone agrees makes sense. Then the quarter passes and the plan somehow does not happen.
Most people go straight to the Doing layer. More sales activity. A new hire. A better campaign. A tighter operating rhythm.
Sometimes that is the problem. Often it is not.
Once a business is already turning over a few million, the next stage can ask something more personal of the founder. It asks you to become familiar with more responsibility, more visibility and more uncertainty than your old identity was built to carry.
The ceiling can be familiar
I wanted a million-dollar business for years. Then I had one for about five years.
It gave me the safety I had been chasing, and it felt right. The issue was not a shortage of ideas or work. My identity had not caught up with the next level.
That is why a founder can know how to move from $3m to $6m, or from $3m to $10m, and still keep recreating the same ceiling. The team may be capable. The plan may be solid. But if the next level registers as an internal threat, the business often finds its way back to what feels normal.
What this looks like in practice
It is rarely dramatic. It can look like putting off the decision that would change the business, holding on to work that should be delegated, or making a growth target public and then treating it as optional when the pressure arrives.
It can also look like exhaustion. You keep adding activity because effort feels safer than stopping long enough to choose differently.
The Being, Thinking and Doing layers
Doing matters. It is the plan, the tactics, the sales process and the operating rhythm.
But Doing is only one layer.
Being asks a harder question: who do you believe you are allowed to be? What level of success feels safe? Do you have the energy to lead the business you say you want to build?
Thinking sits between the two. It shapes the meaning you give the next level and the choices you make when it starts to feel real.
When Being and Thinking are out of step, better tactics can become a more sophisticated way to avoid the real work.

next time you're in a board room and a decision is made okay we're going to achieve this in the next quarter or this by the end of the year but you go away and it doesn't happen this could be why so most people and most boards are looking at the scale influence and life elements as founders but to actually go and create change and maybe take your business from three million to six million to ten million you're actually going to need a new identity you're going to need the internal safety within yourself to go and do that and any money ideas that you have as a as a kid i always said i wanted a million dollar business so guess what i had for five years a million dollar business because my identity hasn't changed and then the safety that that million dollar business created for me was perfect and then my energy okay so i've got three million turnover i want 10 million so i actually had the energy to go and do that so when i'm working with businesses and business owners and we're looking at the absolute awesome framework yes i can help up here on the doing level that's where most business coaches that's where most people are helping but actually a huge amount of the work to get serious change when you're already turning over millions is the being thinking layers so get those two right and you completely change your business
